Social networking giant Facebook is testing new features that promise to turn the network into an online learning platform.
Some Facebook groups listed as a school or class have already noticed that they can add course units that link to one another. As members of the group work their way through the course units, their progress is recorded on a progress bar.
The features began as a tool for developers but now some Facebook users who aren’t developers have noticed that they are also able to add course units to their groups.
Experts remain sceptical, citing privacy concerns. There are worries that learner information may be mined for advertising data. Others have pointed out that it would be difficult to offer the full range of features one might expect of an online learning platform on Facebook.
For now, Facebook are playing down the development, saying only that the features are “something we’re testing”. They’ve promised more information later in the year.
